Allama Iqbal Open College is a government funded college in Islamabad, Pakistan. It is named after Allama Iqbal. The college is the world's second-largest institution of higher education, with an annual enrollment of 1,121,038 undergraduates (starting around 2010), the majority of whom are women, and course enrollments of 3,305,948 (2011). Allama Iqbal Open College (AIOU) was founded in May 1974 as the second open college on the planet and the first in Asia and Africa. The first to be named an individual open college, it was renamed Allama Iqbal Open College in 1977 ahead of the central centenary celebrations of public painter and thinker Allama Muhammad Iqbal. The possibility of an "open college" was defined in broad terms in the school strategy of 1972-80 in these words:
"In some countries open colleges are being used to school and prepare individuals who cannot leave their homes and professions for full-day assessment. An open college, therefore, part-time through correspondence courses. will be developed to provide teaching offices, teaching practices, classes, studios, research centers, TV and radio stations and other mass media of correspondence…”
The idea of distance education was expected to gain more attention and recognition in Pakistan due to the variables of need and the relative disadvantage of women. Similarly, formal schooling in provincial areas is moderately low in various regions of Pakistan and the level of education for women, especially in rural areas, is even lower than in other regions. Many moderate guardians do not allow their girls to go to school and the AIOU, through its distance education arrangement, has opened the doors of education to these young women and girls.
Of late, AIOU wants to address another important public need, the provision of more rational specialist and specialized training. This has become more prevalent in Pakistan, especially of late, due to the government strategy that has empowered the clandestine region in the region. Thus, many middle and middle class individuals are least likely to have access to training and schooling in fields such as business organization, software engineering, medicine and designing. AIOU is trying to solve this problem by reducing charges and creating an understudy help asset.
